An industrial storage tank looks simple from the outside, but the buying decision affects safety, cleaning, maintenance, dispatch, installation, and process reliability. A clear specification protects the buyer and gives the fabricator the information needed to build correctly.
Start with capacity and duty
Confirm working volume, design volume, fluid name, density, temperature, filling method, discharge method, indoor or outdoor service, and whether the tank will be atmospheric or pressure-rated. These decisions control thickness, supports, nozzles, access, and testing.
Match material to the process
SS304, SS316L, carbon steel, lined steel, and specialty alloys each serve different duties. The right MOC should be selected based on corrosion, cleaning chemicals, temperature, contamination risk, and expected service life.
Check nozzles and access points
Review inlet, outlet, drain, vent, overflow, manhole, level instrument, sampling, CIP, lifting lug, earthing, and spare nozzle requirements. Late nozzle additions are a common reason for rework.
Clarify inspection and testing
Tank inspection may include dimensional checks, visual checks, weld inspection, leak testing, hydro testing, pneumatic testing, lining checks, or third-party hold points. Ask for the QAP before approval.
Plan supports and installation
Legs, saddles, base rings, skirts, platform clips, ladder brackets, anchoring, lifting, and dispatch orientation must suit the plant layout. A tank that is well fabricated but difficult to install still causes site pain.
Do not ignore finish and documentation
Surface finish, pickling, passivation, painting, rubber lining, PTFE lining, galvanizing, and insulation clips should be specified. Documentation should include drawings, MTCs, inspection reports, test certificates, and dispatch records.
Final thought
The best tank order is not only about capacity. It is about the right duty, material, nozzle layout, access, testing, support design, finish, and documentation. When these are fixed early, fabrication becomes smoother and plant installation becomes more predictable.
